Progress and Starcrests

Progress on the standalone version of STAR DURF is going well. I am expanding upon the rules quite a bit by adding more sections to help flesh out actions players would expect to be doing in a grand space adventure game. I have also made a few good changes based on some feedback and to fit better into the implied setting.

Besides the rules, I am also honing in on a style for the whole things. I posted some layout style tests on twitter that I think capture the implied cassette futurism setting I'm going for.

Something I can't seem it get a handle on is the name. Perhaps surprisingly, I won't be releasing the game as STAR DURF Standalone.STAR DURF is already a thing and I think it'll stay with the toolkit I developed for DURF JAM 2022. What I am doing now goes beyond that and deserves it's own name. I've gone through 3 iterations and even designed logos for each of them, but I haven't settled yet.

Here is an overview of the rules progress:

Lastly, I'd like to share something fun I'll be adding to character creation;

THE STARCREST BUILDER

A starcrest is an emblem or coat-of-arms for your ship and your crew. It is how the galaxy knows and recognises you. It'll be painted on your ship and come up on data terminals when your ship is scanned. At the end of character creation, the whole crew rolls or decides what their starcrest will be, based on a number of options. The colours, patterns, and shapes were inspired by medieval coat-of-arms.

1. Choose or roll a d8 for a background colour:

2. Choose or roll a d20 and a d8 for an ordinary and its colour:

Here are some examples I rolled:

3. Invent, choose, or roll a d100 for a charge. Colour it as you please.
